Disney has ended the free seven-day promotional trial for Disney Plus — with the company saying it doesn’t need to dangle freebies to lure new customers to the streaming service.

"We continue to test and evaluate different marketing, offers and promotions to grow Disney Plus," a rep for the company told Variety. "The service was set at an attractive price-to-value proposition that we believe delivers a compelling entertainment offering on its own." The House of Mouse is also not offering free trials for its three-way bundle of Disney+, Hulu (which it owns a majority stake in) and ESPN+. Hulu by itself, however, is still offering its one-month free trial.

Disney has removed the seven-day trial option this week, which is no doubt to reduce people signing up, watching ”Hamilton” and then cancelling their subscription, without paying.  This also fits in with the recent change to how Disney now releases new series in full, rather than weekly.

The move comes just a little under two weeks before a film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton arrives on the service. Originally slated to debut in theaters in October 2021, Disney moved up the premiere date and made the medium switch in early May.

Disney Plus is perhaps the most high-profile example of traditional Hollywood reorienting itself to compete in streaming against the likes of Netflix, Amazon and others. Disney Plus, which launched Nov. 12 for $7 a month, was one of the first in a surge of new streaming services all launching within months of each other, a trend sometimes called the streaming wars. The launch was a unrivaled hit: Disney Plus ramped up to 54.5 million subscribers as of early May, the kind of rapid growth that one media analyst characterized as "one of the greatest product launches of all time."
